Is Your Dog Suffering With Separation Anxiety?

It's Never Just About Being Home Alone:

A Different Way to Help Dogs with Separation Anxiety

"I just want to be able to pop to the shops without worrying." 😒

It's one of the most common things I hear from the "owners" I work with.

Not because they don't love their dogs. 🧡

Not because they want to leave them for hours on end.

Simply because they want to enjoy the little moments in life again.

Going out for a coffee. ☕

Taking the children swimming.

Attending a doctor's appointment without rushing home.

Meeting friends for lunch. 🥪

When your dog struggles with separation anxiety, even the simplest tasks can start to feel impossible.

Over time, life becomes smaller. 🙁

Your world begins to revolve around one question:

"Can I leave my dog?"

If you've found yourself asking that question, I want you to know something.❓

You're not alone.

And neither is your dog. 🐶

The biggest misconception about separation anxiety

When people first start looking for help, they're often told that success is all about gradually increasing the amount of time their dog can cope with being alone. ⌛

While carefully planned departure exercises are certainly an important part of recovery, I believe they are only one piece of a much bigger picture.

Because separation anxiety isn't simply about being home alone. 🏠

It's about how your dog feels.

Imagine feeling terrified every time someone you trusted walked out of the door. 😨

Would simply repeating that experience over and over again make you feel safe?

Probably not. 🫣

Real progress begins by understanding the emotions behind the behaviour.

It's never just about counting minutes

One of the biggest shifts in my own work came when I stopped asking,

"How long can this dog stay alone?" 🕥

…and started asking,

"How does this dog feel throughout the rest of their day?"

Because emotional wellbeing doesn't begin when you pick up your keys. 🗝️

It starts long before that.

How well is your dog sleeping? 😴

Do they have opportunities to truly relax?

Are they coping with everyday life? 🥎

Do they recover quickly after stressful experiences?

Do they generally feel safe in their environment?

When a dog's emotional "bucket" is already overflowing, asking them to cope with being left alone can feel overwhelming. 🧠

That's why I developed what I call The Feel Safe Method™.

🧡 Introducing The Feel Safe Method™

The Feel Safe Method™ is built around one simple belief:

Helping dogs feel safe—not simply home alone. 🏠

Instead of focusing only on departure exercises, we take a more compassionate, holistic approach that supports your dog as an individual.

Step One: Feel Safe 😊

Before asking your dog to cope with being left alone, we work on creating an environment where they feel emotionally secure.

That means looking at stress, routines, rest, predictability and helping your dog experience more calm throughout the day.

Step Two: Feel Understood 🧐

Behaviour is communication.

Rather than seeing barking, pacing or destruction as "bad behaviour", we learn to understand what your dog is trying to tell us.

This helps us respond with empathy instead of frustration.

Step Three: Feel Confident 🐕

Only once we've built those strong foundations do we begin carefully planned, evidence-based alone-time training.

Every dog progresses at their own pace.

There are no shortcuts.

No pressure.

Just thoughtful, ethical support that puts your dog's welfare first. 🧡

What progress really looks like

People often imagine success as a dog happily staying home alone for several hours.

But some of the most meaningful changes happen long before that.

Your dog chooses to settle after a walk. 😴

They sleep more deeply.

They recover more quickly after something unexpected. 😃

They seem softer.

More relaxed.

More comfortable in themselves. 🐕

Those are huge wins.

Because they tell us your dog's emotional wellbeing is improving.

And when emotional wellbeing improves, we're building the foundations for lasting progress. 🤩

You deserve support too

One thing that often gets overlooked is the emotional impact separation anxiety has on the "owner."

I've met so many wonderful people who have stopped going out. 😒

Turned down invitations.

Changed jobs.

Cancelled holidays. 🏖️

Felt guilty every single time they picked up their keys.

If that sounds familiar, please know this:

You haven't failed.

Living with separation anxiety can feel incredibly isolating, but you don't have to work through it on your own. 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧

Could The Feel Safe Method™ help your dog?

If you've been trying everything you can think of and still feel stuck, it may be time to look beyond simply counting departure minutes. ⏰

Because my goal isn't simply to help your dog stay home alone. 🏠

My goal is to help them genuinely feel safe.

And when dogs feel safe, wonderful things can happen. 😊
